Ranges describe what most published recipes use. They are a starting point, not a rule, and grind, water, and taste all move them.
What is a coffee to water ratio?
A coffee to water ratio is how many grams of water you brew per gram of coffee. Written 1:16, it means 1 gram of coffee to 16 grams of water, so 20 grams of coffee takes 320 grams of water. A lower number brews stronger, a higher number brews lighter.
Common questions
- What ratio should I start with?
- For pour over, 1:16 is a common starting point. Brew it, taste it, then move in whole steps: 1:15 for a stronger cup, 1:17 for a lighter one. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what did what.
- How much coffee do I need for 500 g of water?
- At 1:16, divide 500 by 16 for about 31 grams of coffee. At 1:15 it is about 33 grams, and at 1:17 about 29 grams. Enter the water figure above and the dose is worked out for you.
- Should I measure water in grams or millilitres?
- Either, because 1 millilitre of water weighs 1 gram. This calculator works in grams so the coffee and the water are on the same scale, which is also how a brewing scale shows it.
